What Dishwasher Detergent Should I Use?

Q: There are pods, liquids, powders, and rinse aids. What detergent should I use for the best cleaning?

A: Each detergent type has pros and cons, but high-quality pods with rinse aid almost always deliver the best results — especially in Florida’s mineral-heavy water conditions.

Here’s a guide to choosing the right detergent and avoiding common mistakes.

1. Detergent Pods (Recommended)

Pods combine detergent, boosters, and rinse aid into a pre-measured dose.

Pros:

  • Best cleaning performance
  • No measuring needed
  • Great for hard water

Recommended brands: Cascade Platinum, Finish Quantum

2. Dishwasher Powder

Powder is cost-effective but sensitive to moisture and doesn’t always dissolve fully.

Pros:

  • Cheapest option
  • Works well in high-heat cycles

Cons:

  • Can clump and leave residue
  • Inconsistent cleaning performance

3. Liquid or Gel Detergent

Liquids dissolve easily but often lack cleaning power.

Cons:

  • Not ideal for greasy items
  • Can leave a film on dishes
  • Washes away too quickly

4. Rinse Aid

Rinse aid improves drying and prevents water spots.

Use it for:

  • Drying plastic
  • Spotless glasses
  • Better water sheeting

5. How Much Detergent Should I Use?

Pods = 1 per load.

Powders & liquids = use the lowest recommended amount unless heavily soiled.

6. When to Call Beacon

Improper detergent use can cause:

  • Leaking from oversudsing
  • Poor cleaning results
  • Film or residue inside the dishwasher
  • Clogging of spray arms

If issues continue after switching detergents, Beacon’s friendly technicians in the yellow polo shirt can check spray arms, filters, and water flow.
