Why Does My Dishwasher Smell Bad?

Q: My dishwasher smells terrible — like rotten food or mildew. What causes this?

A: A smelly dishwasher is almost always caused by food buildup, dirty filters, trapped grease, mold in the door gasket, or stagnant water under the tub. These issues are common — especially in Florida humidity.

Here’s how to fix dishwasher odors and keep them from coming back.

1. Dirty or Clogged Filter (Most Common Cause)

Your dishwasher filter traps food particles. When it becomes clogged, odors start quickly.

Signs:

  • Rotten smell when opening the door
  • Grit or sludge in the bottom
  • Dishes not getting fully clean

Fix: Remove the filter, scrub with warm soapy water, and reinstall.

2. Food or Grease Stuck Under the Spray Arms

Food particles can get trapped inside the spray arm holes.

Check for:

  • Spray arms not spinning freely
  • Black or brown debris inside the holes

Clean using warm water and a toothpick.

3. Mold in the Door Gasket

Florida humidity makes rubber seals a prime spot for mold growth.

Look for:

  • Black slime around the door seal
  • Musty or mildew smell

Fix: Clean with warm soapy water or a vinegar solution.

4. Standing Water in the Drain Area

If water pools at the bottom of the dishwasher, it stagnates and smells bad.

Possible causes:

  • Clogged filter
  • Drain pump issues
  • Blocked drain hose

If the water doesn’t drain, see: Why Won’t My Dishwasher Drain?

5. Using the Wrong Detergent

Cheap or low-quality detergent often leaves residue behind that can sour over time.

Tip: Use pods + rinse aid for best results.
