Why Isn’t My Dishwasher Cleaning Dishes?

Q: My dishwasher runs, but the dishes still come out dirty. What causes this, and what can I check at home?

A: When your dishwasher doesn’t clean properly, it’s usually caused by blocked spray arms, dirty filters, low water temperature, incorrect loading, or detergent issues. Many of these are easy homeowner fixes—others require service.

Here’s how to diagnose the problem and when to call Beacon’s friendly technicians in the yellow polo shirt.

1. Clogged or Blocked Spray Arms

The spray arms provide the water pressure needed to clean dishes. When the holes get clogged by food particles or hard water, cleaning performance drops fast.

Check for:

  • Spray arm holes blocked with debris
  • Spray arms not spinning freely
  • Uneven cleaning (top rack dirty, bottom rack clean)

Safe fix: Remove the spray arms (if your model allows) and rinse them under warm water. Use a toothpick to clear the holes, then reinstall and confirm the arms spin freely by hand.

2. Dirty or Clogged Filter

Modern dishwashers use a filter system to catch food particles. When the filter becomes dirty, cleaning performance suffers.

Symptoms include:

  • Gritty residue on dishes
  • Cloudy glasses
  • Standing water in the filter area

Safe fix: Remove the filter and clean it with warm water and mild soap. For most homes, monthly cleaning is a good routine.

3. Water Temperature Too Low

Dishwashers clean best with water that is 120–140°F. If the water is too cool, detergent may not activate effectively.

Try this: Run your kitchen sink on hot for about a minute before starting the dishwasher so hot water reaches the unit faster.

If the water never gets hot, you may have a water heater issue—not a dishwasher issue.

4. Incorrect Loading

Loading dishes improperly can block spray arms and prevent water from reaching all surfaces.

Avoid:

  • Stacking bowls inside each other
  • Blocking the detergent dispenser with large plates
  • Overloading the silverware basket

Tip: Load items so spray arms can rotate freely and water can reach every surface.

5. Detergent and Rinse Aid Issues

Using the wrong detergent—or too much or too little—can dramatically affect cleaning results.

Common problems:

  • Old or hardened detergent pods
  • Skipping rinse aid
  • Cheap powders leaving residue

Florida note: In Citrus County, rinse aid often helps reduce spotting and improve drying, especially in humid kitchens.

6. Low Water Fill or Circulation Problems

If the dishwasher isn’t filling enough or isn’t circulating water strongly, dishes can stay dirty even with good detergent.

Signs:

  • Very quiet wash sound (little or no “spraying” noise)
  • Food remaining on dishes no matter how you load
  • Cycles that run long but don’t improve results
