Why Is My Garbage Disposal Making Loud Noises?

Q: My garbage disposal runs, but it’s making a terrible grinding or rattling noise. Is that normal?

A: Some noise is normal when a garbage disposal is grinding food, but loud rattling, banging, or metal-on-metal sounds usually mean there’s a foreign object inside or damage to the internal parts. It’s important to stop the disposal and inspect it safely before more damage occurs.

1. Normal vs. Abnormal Disposal Sounds

Normal operation sounds like:

  • A steady, lower-pitched grinding noise
  • A quick change in sound as food clears and only water runs

Abnormal sounds include:

  • Sharp rattling or clanking
  • Metal-on-metal scraping
  • Sudden banging or “rock in a blender” noises

2. Foreign Objects in the Disposal

Common items that fall in by accident include:

  • Spoons, forks, or other utensils
  • Bottle caps or can tabs
  • Hard bones or fruit pits

These can bounce around and damage the grinding components if left inside.

3. How to Check Safely

If you hear loud or harsh noises:

  • Turn the wall switch off immediately.
  • Unplug the disposal or turn off the breaker for extra safety.
  • Use a flashlight to look into the disposal from above.
  • Use tongs or pliers—not your hand—to remove visible objects.

Never reach into the disposal with your fingers, even if you believe it is off.

4. Internal Damage or Loose Components

If nothing obvious is stuck but the disposal still makes harsh noises with no food inside:

  • The grinding components may be bent, broken, or loose.
  • Internal wear or corrosion may be causing parts to scrape.

Continuing to use a disposal in this condition can lead to leaks or a total failure.

When to Call Beacon

  • Safely inspect the disposal for hidden objects and internal damage.
  • Determine whether repair or replacement makes more sense.
