Why Is My Garbage Disposal Humming but Not Grinding?
Q: When I flip the switch, my garbage disposal just hums. It doesn’t grind or spin. What’s wrong?
A: A garbage disposal that hums but doesn’t grind is usually jammed or has a seized motor. It’s important to shut it off quickly and never put your hand inside the disposal. Some basic unjamming steps are safe for homeowners, but forcing a stuck disposal can damage the unit or cause injury.
1. Turn It Off Right Away
If the disposal is humming but not turning:
- Turn the wall switch off immediately.
- Switch off the breaker if you plan to attempt safe unjamming steps.
Letting a jammed motor hum for too long can overheat and trip safety devices.
2. Never Put Your Hand Inside the Disposal
Even when it’s off, you should never place your hand down into the disposal chamber. Blades and impellers can move suddenly if power is restored or the unit frees up.
3. Look for Safe Unjamming Options
Many disposals have a way to manually turn the motor:
- Some have a hex key opening on the bottom where you can insert an Allen wrench and gently work the motor back and forth.
- Others allow a special wrench to turn the grinding plate from above (with power off and using an appropriate tool, not your hand).
If you’re unsure, check your disposal’s manual or consult a professional before attempting to turn anything.
4. Reset the Disposal After Clearing a Jam
If the jam is cleared and the motor moves freely:
- Press the reset button on the bottom of the disposal, if present.
- Restore power at the breaker.
- Turn on cold water and flip the wall switch briefly to test.
5. When the Motor Is Seized or the Jam Won’t Clear
If:
- The disposal continues to hum and trip the reset, or
- The motor will not turn even with a wrench, or
- You’re not comfortable trying to free a jam
…it’s best to stop and call for service before more damage occurs.
