Why Isn’t My Dishwasher Drying the Dishes?

Q: My dishwasher runs normally but the dishes come out wet. What causes this?

A: When dishes stay wet after a cycle, the issue is usually the heating element, vent system, rinse aid level, or the type of items being washed (like plastic). Most drying problems are simple to diagnose.

Here’s a breakdown of the most common causes and how to fix them.

1. Rinse Aid Is Empty (Most Common)

Rinse aid dramatically improves drying performance. Without it, water clings to dishes.

Signs:

  • Water droplets on glasses
  • Top rack items consistently wet

Fix: Refill rinse aid monthly.

2. Heating Element Failure

The heating element warms the water and heats the air during the drying cycle. If it fails, dishes remain wet.

Symptoms include:

  • Cold water at the end of the cycle
  • Plastic items soaking wet
  • Error codes on display

3. Improper Loading

Items that nest together or block vents do not dry well.

Avoid:

  • Bowl-on-bowl stacking
  • Large pans blocking airflow
  • Overloading the rack

4. Plastic Items Dry Poorly

Plastic holds onto moisture because it does not retain heat like glass or ceramic.

Tip: Place plastic items on the top rack and leave the door cracked after cycles.

5. Dishwasher Vent Not Opening

Some models use a vent to release moisture. If the vent is stuck shut, dishes cannot dry.

Signs:

  • Heavy condensation
  • Steam leaking from the sides of the door

6. Low Water Temperature

If the water entering the dishwasher is too cool, the dishes won’t dry properly.

Tip: Run your kitchen sink hot for 1 minute before starting a cycle.
