Quick Checks You Can Do (Easiest First)

1. Check the detergent type. HE washers should use HE detergent. Non-HE soap can create excessive foam and trigger “SUDS/SD” warnings.
2. Use less detergent. Too much detergent is the most common cause, especially with concentrated products.
3. Run an extra rinse (without adding detergent). This can help clear leftover suds from the load and washer.
4. Clean the detergent dispenser. Built-up soap residue in the drawer can redeposit and contribute to oversudsing.
5. Run a washer clean/tub clean cycle. Residue buildup inside the machine can cause recurring suds issues.
6. Watch for drain/spin problems. If the washer drains slowly or leaves clothes very wet, a drain issue may be making suds warnings worse.

Most Common Causes

Too Much Detergent

This is the most common cause of a “SUDS” or “SD” message. Modern washers, especially HE models, use less water and need much less detergent than many people expect.

Wrong Detergent Type (Non-HE in an HE Washer)

Non-HE detergent can produce too much foam in an HE washer and cause repeated suds warnings, long cycles, and poor rinsing.

Detergent Residue Buildup in the Washer

Soap and softener buildup in the drum, dispenser, or internal washer surfaces can cause extra foaming even when you are not using much detergent.

Overdosing Concentrated Detergent Pods/Liquid

Concentrated detergents are easy to overuse. Even a small amount too much can create excessive suds in certain load sizes or water conditions.

Drain Restriction or Slow Drain (Contributing Factor)

If the washer is slow to drain, it may struggle to rinse and clear foam efficiently, which can make “SUDS/SD” messages appear more often.

Pressure/Control Sensing Issue (Less Common)

Less commonly, a washer may misread suds or water conditions due to a sensing/control issue. This usually becomes more likely after detergent use and drain problems have been ruled out.
