Quick Checks You Can Do (Easiest First)

1. Clean the softener compartment and siphon cap/insert. Residue buildup here is one of the most common causes of softener not dispensing.
2. Do not overfill the softener cup. Fill only to the marked max line if your dispenser has one.
3. Dilute thick fabric softener (if your product recommends it). Some softeners are very thick and can leave buildup or siphon poorly.
4. Check for residue in the dispenser drawer housing. Blocked rinse ports/openings can reduce proper flushing.
5. Observe water flow into the dispenser area. Weak flow may prevent proper flushing of the softener compartment.
6. Run a washer clean/tub clean cycle. General buildup in the machine can contribute to recurring dispenser issues.

Most Common Causes

Clogged Softener Dispenser or Siphon Insert

Many washers use a siphon-style softener cup/insert. If the siphon piece gets coated with residue, the softener may not flush out at the correct time.

Fabric Softener Buildup (Sticky Residue)

Fabric softener can leave waxy or sticky buildup in the drawer and dispenser housing over time. This can block water flow and keep softener from dispensing.

Overfilling the Softener Compartment

If the softener compartment is filled above the max line, it may not dispense correctly or may leave leftover liquid in the cup after the cycle.

Softener Too Thick to Flow Properly

Some products are very concentrated or thicken in warm laundry rooms. If the product does not flow well, it can cling to the dispenser and leave residue behind.

Weak Water Flow Through the Dispenser

The dispenser needs proper water flow at the right time in the cycle to flush softener. Weak flow can leave softener in the compartment.

Water Inlet Valve or Control Timing Issue

Less commonly, a washer may have a water inlet valve or control issue that affects how the dispenser is flushed during the rinse stage.
