Why Is My Oven Not Heating Properly?

Q: My oven is on, but food takes forever to cook or comes out uneven. Why isn’t my oven heating properly?

A: When an electric oven doesn’t heat the way it should, the most common causes are a failing bake or broil element, a temperature sensor problem, calibration drift, or a control issue. In many cases, the oven is heating — just not to the temperature shown on the display.

1) Check the Bake Element

In most electric ovens, the lower bake element provides the majority of the heat:

  • If the element does not glow at all during preheat, it may be broken or not receiving power.
  • If only a small section glows, the element may be partially failed and unable to reach full temperature.

Safety note: Never touch an oven element or attempt repairs with power connected. These components operate at high voltage.

2) Temperature Sensor Problems

Modern ovens rely on a temperature sensor (usually a thin metal rod on the back wall) to regulate heat. If the sensor is:

  • Out of calibration
  • Damaged or loose
  • Sending incorrect readings to the control board

…the oven may shut off early, cycle incorrectly, or never reach the set temperature.

3) Oven Calibration Drift

Some ovens allow minor temperature calibration adjustments:

  • You may be able to offset the displayed temperature up or down in the control settings.
  • An oven thermometer can help compare the actual temperature to the display over multiple cycles.

Small calibration issues are common over time and can cause slow cooking or uneven results.

4) Control Board or Relay Issues

If the control board or internal relays are failing, the oven may:

  • Heat inconsistently
  • Only bake or broil, but not both
  • Shut off before reaching temperature

These problems require professional testing and model-specific replacement parts.

5) Electric Ovens Only

Beacon Services & Appliances services electric ovens and ranges only. If you have a gas oven or range concern, you’ll need to contact a properly licensed gas appliance professional or your gas utility provider.

When to Call Beacon

If your oven won’t reach temperature, heats unevenly, or one of the elements never glows, it’s time for a professional inspection. Our friendly technicians in yellow can test elements, sensors, wiring, and controls — then help you decide whether repair or replacement makes the most sense for your oven’s age and condition.

FAQ

Why does my oven say it’s preheated but food still cooks slowly?

This often happens when the bake element is weak or the temperature sensor is out of calibration. The oven may signal preheat before it actually reaches or maintains the correct temperature.

Should the bake element glow the entire time?

The bake element cycles on and off during cooking, but during preheat it should glow steadily. If it never glows or only partially heats, it may be failing.

Can an oven work if only the broil element heats?

No. The bake element provides most of the cooking heat. If only the broil element works, food will cook unevenly or not at all.

Is it safe to keep using an oven that doesn’t heat correctly?

Uneven or unreliable heating can lead to undercooked food and excessive strain on components. It’s best to have the issue diagnosed before continued use.

Does Beacon service gas ovens?

No. Beacon Services & Appliances services electric ovens and ranges only.
