Why Is My Garbage Disposal Not Turning On?
Q: I flip the switch for my garbage disposal and nothing happens. Why won’t it turn on at all?
A: When a garbage disposal does absolutely nothing—no noise, no hum, no movement—the problem is usually electrical. In most homes, the cause is a tripped reset button, a breaker or GFCI issue, a failed wall switch, or an internal motor failure. A few basic checks are safe for homeowners, but anything involving wiring or electrical testing should be handled carefully.
Check the Reset Button on the Disposal
Most garbage disposals have a small reset button on the bottom or lower side of the unit. This button trips if the disposal overheats or jams.
- Turn the wall switch for the disposal OFF.
- Look under the sink for a small button on the bottom of the disposal (often red or black).
- Press the button firmly until it clicks.
After resetting, turn on cold water and flip the wall switch again to see if the disposal runs.
Check the Circuit Breaker
If the disposal overheated or lost power, the breaker may have tripped.
- Locate your home’s electrical breaker panel.
- Look for a breaker labeled “disposal,” “kitchen,” or similar.
- If the breaker is in the middle position, move it fully to OFF, then back to ON once.
If the breaker immediately trips again, turn the disposal switch off and stop troubleshooting.
Look for a GFCI Outlet Issue
Some garbage disposals are powered through a GFCI-protected outlet, even if the outlet isn’t directly under the sink.
- Check nearby kitchen outlets with TEST and RESET buttons.
- If one is tripped, press RESET firmly.
A tripped GFCI can silently cut power to the disposal.
Wall Switch or Electrical Problems
If the reset button, breaker, and GFCI all check out, the issue is often beyond a simple homeowner fix:
- The wall switch may have failed.
- There could be a loose or damaged wire at the switch, outlet, or disposal.
- The disposal motor or internal windings may have failed.
At this point, further testing should be left to a professional to avoid electrical hazards.
