Why Is My Air Conditioner Not Cooling Enough?
Q: My AC turns on, but the house still feels warm. Why isn’t my air conditioner cooling enough?
A: When your AC isn’t cooling the home as well as it used to, the cause is usually airflow restriction, a dirty coil, a frozen coil, duct leaks, or refrigerant-related issues. Some things are safe for homeowners to check, while others require a licensed HVAC technician.
1. Check Your Air Filter First
A clogged air filter is the #1 reason an AC can’t cool properly. If the AC can’t move enough air across the coil:
- The system cools less
- The coil may start freezing
- Humidity stays high
Replace the filter and give the system 2–3 hours to stabilize.
2. Dirty Indoor Coil (Evaporator)
Dust and debris can clog the coil inside your air handler. This blocks airflow and reduces cooling capacity. A technician must access and clean the coil safely using approved cleaning methods.
3. Dirty Outdoor Coil (Condenser)
Outside, the condenser coil releases heat from your home. If it’s blocked by:
- Grass
- Leaves
- Dust or sand
- Pet hair or mulch
…the system cannot cool efficiently. Clear vegetation and gently rinse with a hose (never pressure wash).
4. Frozen Evaporator Coil
If the suction line (the insulated copper line) is icy, your system may be freezing up due to:
- Low airflow
- Blower issues
- Low refrigerant
Turn the system off and switch the thermostat fan to ON to melt the ice.
5. Duct Leaks or Hot Attics
In Florida attics, a small duct leak can dump 120° air into the system. Look for:
- Ripped or disconnected ducts
- Crushed or kinked ducts
- Insulation gaps
Beacon can inspect ductwork if airflow is low.
6. Low Refrigerant (Requires a Technician)
Refrigerant issues show up as:
- Long run times
- Poor cooling
- Ice on the refrigerant lines
A system should never “use up” refrigerant — low levels mean a leak that needs diagnosis.
When to Call Beacon
If the AC is still struggling after replacing the filter and checking airflow, it’s time to call Beacon’s friendly technicians in the yellow polo shirt. We can test coil temperature drops, inspect refrigerant pressures, check the blower motor, and confirm whether a component is failing.
