Why Does My AC or Air Handler Smell Musty?

Q: When my AC runs, I notice a musty or “old house” smell. Why does my system smell this way?

A: A musty smell from your AC or air handler almost always means moisture is lingering where it shouldn’t — most commonly in the drain pan, on the evaporator coil, or inside nearby ductwork. In Florida’s humid climate, even small drainage or airflow issues can quickly turn into odor problems.

1. Standing Water in the Drain Pan

As your air conditioner cools your home, moisture condenses on the evaporator coil and drains into a pan below it. If the condensate drain line becomes clogged or slow, water can sit in the pan and create musty odors.

  • Water visible around the indoor unit
  • AC shutting off due to a float switch
  • Musty smell strongest near the air handler

2. Dirty or Damp Evaporator Coil

Over time, dust, pollen, and organic material can collect on the evaporator coil. When moisture combines with that buildup, it can create a “wet sock” or mildew-like odor when the system starts.

  • Overdue or undersized filters allow more debris to reach the coil
  • Short cycling can leave parts of the coil damp longer than normal

A heavily impacted coil often needs professional cleaning before odors can improve.

3. Air Filter and Return Air Problems

If your air filter is overdue, the wrong size, or not sealing properly, dust can build up in the return plenum, on the blower wheel, and around the coil. When the blower turns on, those odors are pushed through the vents.

4. Ductwork and Equipment Location Issues

Leaky ducts running through humid attics, garages, or crawlspaces can pull musty air into the system and spread it throughout the home. Older flex duct, dusty return plenums, or poorly sealed connections can all contribute to persistent odors.

5. How UV Lights and IAQ Upgrades Can Help

Once moisture issues are corrected, indoor air quality upgrades can help keep smells from returning:

  • UV lights near the coil help keep coil surfaces cleaner over time
  • Whole-home IAQ systems like REME HALO can reduce certain odors and airborne contaminants

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a musty AC smell dangerous?

It’s usually not immediately dangerous, but it is a sign of moisture buildup that can lead to mold growth or system damage if ignored.

Will running the fan more get rid of the smell?

No. Running the fan without fixing the moisture source can actually spread odors further through the duct system.

Can changing the filter fix a musty smell?

It can help if the smell is mild, but persistent odors usually mean moisture or buildup deeper in the system.

Do UV lights eliminate musty smells completely?

UV lights help prevent buildup on the coil, but they work best after the underlying moisture issue is corrected.

Can Beacon diagnose and fix AC odor problems?

Yes. Beacon technicians can identify the moisture source, clean affected components, and recommend IAQ upgrades if needed.
