What Is and Isn’t Covered by HVAC & Appliance Warranties?
Warranty coverage sounds simple — until something breaks. One of the most common questions we hear in Citrus County is:
“Is this covered, or am I paying out of pocket?”
The answer depends on why the part failed, whether the equipment was installed correctly, and what type of coverage you have (standard manufacturer warranty vs. extended coverage). Below is a clear breakdown of what is usually covered — and what is usually excluded.
What HVAC & Appliance Warranties Usually Cover
Most standard warranties are designed to cover manufacturer defects — problems caused by materials or workmanship, not outside conditions or neglect.
HVAC Systems
Common covered parts may include:
- Compressors
- Fan motors
- Blower motors
- Control boards
- Coils
- Defective sensors
- Other failures not caused by neglect or improper installation
Major Appliances
Common covered parts may include:
- Motors
- Pumps
- Electronic boards
- Sealed system failures (refrigerators / freezers)
- Early-life breakdowns
- Factory defects
In many cases, the manufacturer supplies the covered part at no cost during the warranty term. Labor is often limited after the first year unless you have an extended plan.
What Warranties Usually Do NOT Cover
Warranties typically do not cover issues caused by installation, maintenance, environment, or damage.
Common Exclusions
- Improper installation (including unlicensed installation where required)
- No maintenance (dirty coils, clogged filters, grease buildup)
- Pest damage (lizards, ants, rodents — very common in Florida)
- Power surges (unless you have extended surge coverage)
- Cosmetic issues (scratches, dents)
- Misuse or physical damage
- Modified wiring or bypassed safety devices
- Incorrect venting, drain installation, or electrical setup
In other words: if the failure wasn’t caused by a defect in the part itself, warranty coverage is less likely.
Do Extended Warranties Cover More?
Extended coverage can significantly reduce out-of-pocket costs — especially when labor is included beyond year one.
CPS Appliance Warranties
Depending on the plan, extended appliance coverage may include:
- Years 2–5 labor
- Power surge damage
- Replacement or buyout if parts are unavailable
JB HVAC Labor Warranties
Beacon includes labor coverage options such as:
- 5-year labor on Airtemp
- 12-year labor on Whirlpool systems
- Labor coverage that matches manufacturer parts terms
These plans can drastically reduce the cost of covered repairs over time.
