Why Won’t My Washer Spin?

Q: My washer won’t spin at all — or it tries to spin but stops. What causes this?

A: When a washer stops spinning, the issue is usually related to an unbalanced load, a failing lid lock, a worn drive belt, or problems with the motor or control board. Some causes are simple, while others require a technician.

Here’s how to diagnose a washer that won’t spin — and when to call Beacon’s friendly technicians in the yellow polo shirt.

More topics available in the Washer Help Center.

1. Unbalanced Load (Most Common)

Your washer will refuse to spin if the load is uneven. This protects the drum, bearings, and motor.

Signs:

  • Washer starts to spin but stops suddenly
  • Clothes clumped to one side
  • Excessive shaking or banging sounds

Try this: redistribute towels, sheets, or heavy items and restart the spin cycle.

2. Faulty Lid Lock (Top-Load Washers)

If the lid lock doesn’t engage, the washer is designed not to spin for safety. This is extremely common.

Symptoms:

  • Washer won’t move past “wash” into “spin”
  • Flashing or clicking lid lock light
  • Error codes like F5, E2, or “lid” messages

If pushing firmly on the lid doesn’t help, the lid lock may need repair.

3. Drive Belt Slipped or Broken

On many washers, the drive belt connects the motor to the drum. Over time it can loosen, crack, or fall off.

Signs include:

  • Drum won’t spin, but you hear the motor humming
  • Burning rubber smell
  • Washer fills and drains but never spins

Belt replacement is a common, straightforward repair.

4. Motor or Motor Coupling Issues

On certain top-load models, a plastic/rubber coupler connects the motor to the transmission. These couplers frequently wear out.

Symptoms:

  • Loud “thumping” or “clicking” noises
  • Washer agitates but won’t spin
  • Washer smells burnt or overheated

This repair requires a trained technician.

5. Drain Problems Prevent Spinning

If your washer can’t drain fully, it will not spin. A partially clogged drain pump or hose can stop the spin cycle altogether.

Signs:

  • Water remains in the drum
  • Washer pauses before spin
  • Humming sound from the pump

If draining is the issue, see our guide: Why Is My Washer Not Draining?

6. Control Board or Sensor Problems

Modern washers monitor load balance, lid lock status, and spin speed. If the control board isn’t receiving the correct signals, the spin cycle may be skipped.

Signs:

  • Washer randomly stops mid-cycle
  • Error codes on the display
  • No attempt to spin at all

7. When to Call Beacon

Call Beacon Services & Appliances if:

  • Your washer will not spin even after redistributing the load
  • You hear grinding, buzzing, or burning smells
  • The lid lock light flashes or clicks
  • The washer drains but won’t spin afterward
  • You see error codes or flashing lights

Our friendly technicians in the yellow polo shirt will diagnose whether the issue is the belt, pump, motor, lid lock, or control board.
