Why Won’t My Thermostat Turn the Fan Off?

If your air conditioner’s fan keeps running even when the thermostat is set to AUTO — or even when the system is off — it can be frustrating and confusing. In many cases, the thermostat is doing exactly what it’s told, and the issue is happening inside the HVAC system itself.

Below, our friendly technicians in yellow explain the most common reasons an AC fan won’t shut off, what Citrus County homeowners can safely check, and when it’s time to call Beacon.

1. Thermostat Fan Setting Is Set to ON

Most thermostats have two basic fan modes:

  • AUTO — Fan runs only when cooling or heating is active
  • ON — Fan runs continuously, even when the system is idle

If the fan is set to ON, it will never shut off.

What to check:

  • Confirm the FAN setting is on AUTO
  • Check for “Circulate” or “Fan Schedule” modes on smart thermostats

If the fan continues running nonstop in AUTO mode, move on to the next steps.

2. Normal Fan Run-On After Cooling

Some HVAC systems intentionally keep the blower running for a few minutes after the cooling cycle ends. This helps remove leftover moisture from the evaporator coil — especially important in Florida’s humid climate.

This is normal if:

  • The fan shuts off within 5–10 minutes
  • The system just reached the set temperature

If the fan runs indefinitely, something else is likely wrong.

3. Stuck Fan Relay or Control Board

Inside the air handler, a relay or control board tells the blower motor when to turn on and off. If that relay sticks, the fan may run constantly — regardless of what the thermostat is asking for.

Common signs:

  • Fan runs as soon as the breaker is turned on
  • Fan keeps running even with the thermostat removed from the wall
  • Thermostat settings have no effect on the fan

This issue requires professional diagnosis and repair.

4. Shorted or Damaged Thermostat Wiring

The fan is controlled by the low-voltage G-wire. If that wire touches another wire or metal surface, the system may think the fan is constantly being requested.

Common causes include:

  • Loose wires behind the thermostat
  • Rodent damage in attics or walls
  • Wires pinched during renovations or painting

Because this involves low-voltage electrical signals, testing should be handled by a technician.

5. Thermostat Internal Failure

Occasionally, the thermostat itself fails and keeps the fan energized even when it shouldn’t.

Possible signs:

  • Fan runs even when the thermostat is set to OFF
  • Fan continues after the thermostat is removed
  • Display issues, lagging buttons, or incorrect readings

If removing the thermostat does not shut the fan off, the problem is almost always in the air handler — not the thermostat.

6. Heat Pump Defrost Mode (Winter Months)

During defrost cycles, heat pumps may run the blower differently or keep it on longer than expected. This is usually temporary and happens only during colder weather.

7. System Safety or Protection Mode

Some systems force the fan to run to protect components from damage.

This may occur if:

  • The blower motor is overheating
  • The control board detects abnormal current
  • The evaporator coil is freezing

In these cases, the fan running continuously is a warning sign — not something to ignore.

When to Call Beacon

You should contact Beacon Services & Appliances if:

  • The thermostat is set to AUTO but the fan never shuts off
  • The fan runs even with the thermostat removed
  • You suspect a stuck relay or wiring issue
  • Your HVAC system behavior has changed unexpectedly

Our friendly technicians in yellow can trace signals from the thermostat to the control board, identify why the fan is running nonstop, and restore proper system operation. We’ll see how Beacon can help.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my AC fan keep running in AUTO?

This is usually caused by a stuck relay, wiring issue, or system protection mode rather than a thermostat setting.

Is it normal for the fan to run after cooling?

Yes. Many systems run the fan for a few minutes after cooling to remove moisture from the coil.

What does it mean if the fan runs with the thermostat removed?

That almost always indicates a problem inside the air handler, not the thermostat.

Can a bad thermostat cause the fan to stay on?

Yes, but it’s less common than control board or relay issues inside the HVAC system.

Should I turn the system off if the fan won’t stop?

If the fan runs nonstop and the system is acting abnormally, shutting it off and calling for service is a good precaution.
