Why Won’t My Microwave Door Close or Why Do I See a Door Error?
Q: My microwave says “door” or won’t start because it thinks the door is open. What causes this?
A: When a microwave won’t recognize that the door is closed, it’s almost always a door safety issue. Worn latches, sagging hinges, or faulty internal door switches can prevent the microwave from running — even if the door looks shut.
Below are the most common reasons this happens, what you can safely check at home, and when it’s time to call our friendly technicians in yellow polos.
1. Misaligned or Damaged Door Latches
Microwave doors use small plastic latches that slide into slots in the frame. These latches activate the internal safety switches.
Signs of latch problems:
- Door feels loose or “springy” when closing
- You must lift or push the door to make the microwave start
- The door works sometimes, but not consistently
If the latch is cracked, bent, or worn down, it may no longer engage the switches properly.
2. Worn or Sagging Door Hinges
Over-the-range microwaves and heavier doors can sag over time. When this happens, the door latches no longer line up with the switch assembly.
Check for:
- A door that sits lower on one side
- A visible gap when the door appears “closed”
- Door rubbing or dragging on the frame
Even a small misalignment can trigger a door error.
3. Faulty Internal Door Switches
Inside the microwave are multiple micro-switches that confirm the door is fully closed. If any switch fails or becomes misaligned, the microwave will not run.
Common symptoms include:
- “Door” or “open/close door” message on the display
- Microwave beeps but won’t start
- Unit works only if pressure is applied to the door
Testing or replacing door switches requires opening the microwave cabinet and should only be done by a trained technician.
4. Door or Frame Damage
If the microwave door or metal frame has been bent from impact or repeated slamming, alignment can be permanently affected.
In some cases, especially with frame damage, replacement may be safer than repair.
What You Can Safely Check at Home
- Open and close the door firmly — listen for solid clicks
- Inspect door latches for cracks or missing plastic
- Ensure nothing is stuck between the door and frame
Important: Never tape, bypass, or defeat a microwave door switch. This disables critical safety protections.
