LG Dryer D80 Error Code: What It Means & What to Check

Q: My LG dryer is showing D80. What does it mean, and what should I check?

A: On many LG dryers, D80 is part of the Flow Sense system and indicates a serious exhaust airflow restriction (a venting problem). The dryer is detecting that it can’t push air out properly. That means longer dry times, hotter operating temperatures, and higher risk of overheating and lint-related safety issues. The fix is usually not a “part” — it’s almost always a duct/hood restriction or lint buildup in the vent path.

Why D80 matters (don’t ignore this one)

  • Clothes take forever to dry (or come out hot but still damp)
  • The dryer and laundry room feel extra hot
  • You may notice a burning-lint smell or the dryer shuts down mid-cycle
  • Restricted airflow can contribute to overheating and vent safety hazards

In Florida homes, humidity makes proper airflow even more important — a restricted vent can turn a normal load into a “never dries” load fast.

Step 1: Check the lint screen and lint screen housing

Start with the basics (and do this every load):

  1. Remove and clean the lint screen.
  2. Look down into the lint screen housing. If it’s packed with lint, that restriction can trigger Flow Sense codes.
  3. If you can safely reach visible lint, remove it. (Avoid damaging any internal parts.)

Tip: Fabric softener sheets can leave a film on the lint screen that reduces airflow. If water doesn’t pass through the screen easily, wash it with warm water and a soft brush, then dry completely.

Step 2: Pull the dryer and inspect the flex duct for crushing or kinks

One of the most common D80 causes is a crushed or kinked flex vent behind the dryer.

  • Unplug the dryer.
  • Pull it forward carefully.
  • Check that the flex duct isn’t smashed flat or bent sharply.

If the duct is crushed, straighten it and re-position the dryer so it doesn’t re-crush the line when pushed back.

Step 3: Check exterior hood airflow

Go outside to the vent hood and run the dryer on an air/fluff or timed dry setting for a minute. You should feel:

  • Strong, steady airflow
  • The damper/flap opening freely

If airflow is weak, intermittent, or the flap barely moves, you likely have a restriction in the vent line or a blocked hood (lint, screen cover, pest guard, or stuck flap).

Important: Many “screen” style vent covers clog quickly and can cause repeated Flow Sense errors.

Step 4: Think about the vent run length and elbows

D80 is very common on long vent runs or vents with too many turns. Things that make restrictions worse:

  • Long runs through attic/crawl space/soffit
  • Multiple elbows (each turn reduces airflow)
  • Sagging flex duct that creates “lint traps”
  • Shared vents or odd transitions

If your vent is long or complicated, a professional vent cleaning and airflow verification is usually the fastest path to a real fix.

Step 5: If you still get D80, suspect lint buildup in the blower housing or duct

Even if the lint screen looks clean, lint can collect in:

  • The blower housing
  • The duct connection behind the dryer
  • The wall/ceiling vent line all the way to the exterior hood

This is where dryer vent cleaning makes the biggest difference — and it’s also where safety risk builds up over time.

Likely causes vs. “parts”

D80 is usually not a failed part. Most cases are:

  • Venting/hood restriction (lint buildup, clogged hood, bad cover)
  • Blower housing lint restricting airflow
  • Less commonly: Flow Sense / duct sensor or related wiring issues (especially if airflow is clearly strong)

Clue: If the dryer dries normally when vented temporarily to a short, safe run (and D80 disappears), your home vent line is the culprit.

When to call Beacon

If you’ve checked the flex duct, exterior hood, and lint screen housing — and you still see D80 or long dry times — it’s time to schedule a dryer vent cleaning and airflow check. Our friendly technicians in yellow can identify restrictions, remove lint safely, and help you avoid repeat Flow Sense errors.

FAQ: LG Dryer D80 Error Code

What does D80 mean on an LG dryer?

D80 is a Flow Sense warning indicating a major vent restriction. The dryer isn’t getting enough airflow through the exhaust duct.

Is it safe to keep using the dryer with a D80 code?

It’s a warning that airflow is restricted, which can cause overheating and very long dry times. It’s best to address the vent restriction as soon as possible before continuing regular use.

What’s the fastest thing to check for D80?

Check the lint screen and the lint screen housing, then pull the dryer and inspect the flex duct behind it for crushing or kinks.

How do I check the outside dryer vent hood?

Run the dryer and feel for strong, steady airflow at the exterior hood. If airflow is weak or the flap barely opens, the vent line or hood is likely restricted.

What usually causes D80—bad parts or bad venting?

Most D80 codes are caused by venting restrictions (lint buildup, clogged hood, long runs, too many elbows, crushed duct). Parts issues are less common unless airflow is clearly strong.

When should I schedule a dryer vent cleaning?

If D80 persists after checking the lint screen, flex duct, and exterior hood — or if dry times are long — schedule a vent cleaning and airflow check to fix the root cause.
