LG Dishwasher E1 Error Code: What It Means & What to Check
If your LG dishwasher is showing E1, it usually means the dishwasher’s overfill protection or leak protection has been triggered. In many cases, the machine detected water where it shouldn’t be (often in the base pan) and may stop the cycle and run the drain pump to prevent flooding.
The good news: sometimes E1 is caused by a one-time splash/overflow event or a door seal issue — but it can also indicate a true leak from the sump or internal hoses. Start with the safe checks below.
What E1 usually means on an LG dishwasher
E1 often indicates overfill/leak protection. Many dishwashers have a safety switch or sensor that trips if water collects in the base. When triggered, the dishwasher may drain continuously or refuse to run a normal wash until the condition clears.
Safety first: what to do right away
- Stop the cycle if it’s running.
- If you see leaking under the sink or at the dishwasher, shut off the dishwasher water supply valve (and dry up water).
- Turn off power at the breaker before pulling the dishwasher out.
- Keep water away from outlets, power strips, and cords.
Quick checks you can do at home
1) Check the door and gasket seal
A poor door seal can cause water to escape and trigger the safety system. Inspect:
- Gasket for debris, tears, or deformation
- Door closing evenly (no dish racks or large items preventing closure)
- Spray arm clearance (items that strike the spray arm can splash water toward the door)
2) Let the unit dry completely if water got into the base
If the dishwasher overflowed, foamed up, or leaked briefly, water may have collected in the base pan. After shutting off water and power, allowing the unit to fully dry can sometimes clear E1.
- Leave the dishwasher door slightly open.
- Use towels to dry any visible water at the front/toe-kick area.
- If you can safely remove the toe-kick panel, you may see moisture in the base area (avoid touching wiring).
If E1 returns after it has fully dried, a recurring leak is likely.
3) Verify the dishwasher is level
An out-of-level dishwasher can cause water to pool toward the door and leak past the gasket, especially during wash action. If the dishwasher was recently installed or moved, leveling is worth checking.
4) Rule out oversudsing (can cause overflow-like symptoms)
Using the wrong detergent (or too much) can create excessive foam that pushes water out of the door area.
- Make sure you’re using dishwasher detergent (not dish soap).
- If you saw lots of foam, let it settle and dry; then run a quick rinse cycle (only after you’re sure the base is dry and there’s no active leak).
5) Power reset (after you’ve addressed water concerns)
- Turn the breaker off for 2–5 minutes.
- Restore power and see if E1 clears.
If the dishwasher immediately runs the drain pump again or E1 comes back quickly, stop and schedule service.
Most common causes of LG E1
- Water in the base pan triggering a float/base switch
- Leak at the sump or internal hoses/clamps
- Door gasket/door seal leak
- Dishwasher not level causing water to push past the door seal
- Inlet valve sticking open and overfilling
- Float switch/base switch fault (less common than a real leak)
Likely parts involved (when it needs service)
- Sump seals, internal hoses, clamps
- Base/float switch (leak sensor assembly)
- Water inlet valve
- Door gasket (if damaged)
When to call Beacon
Call for service if:
- E1 returns after the unit has fully dried
- You see repeated water under the dishwasher or in front of it
- The dishwasher runs the drain pump continuously
- You suspect an internal leak (sump/hoses) or an inlet valve overfill problem
Our friendly technicians in yellow can locate the leak source, verify the base/float switch operation, and correct the underlying issue safely.
