Gas vs Electric Dryers: Which Is Best for Florida?

Q: I’m shopping for a new dryer. Should I choose gas or electric? What’s better for Florida homes?

A: Both gas and electric dryers can dry clothes well, but for many Citrus County and Florida homes, an electric dryer is usually the simplest, most practical choice because it’s widely supported, easier to install, and typically simpler to maintain. Gas dryers can be a great option if your laundry area already has a properly installed gas hookup—otherwise the added installation requirements can outweigh the benefits.

Important: Beacon Services & Appliances repairs electric dryers only. We do not service gas appliances.

Here’s a clear breakdown to help you choose the right dryer for your home. For more answers, visit the Dryer Help Center.

1. Installation Differences

Electric dryers

  • Use a 240V electric dryer outlet (common in many Florida homes)
  • Typically simpler to install and swap out
  • No gas line or gas venting considerations

Gas dryers

  • Require an appropriate gas supply connection plus a standard 120V outlet
  • May involve higher installation complexity if a gas hookup isn’t already present
  • Should be installed and serviced by qualified gas professionals

If your laundry room doesn’t already have a proper gas connection, electric is usually the easier (and often cheaper) path.

2. Operating Cost and Energy Use

Gas dryers can be slightly cheaper to run in some situations, but the real-world difference depends on local utility rates and your usage. In many Florida homes, the monthly savings (if any) may be small compared to the added installation requirements of gas.

3. Drying Performance in Florida Humidity

Both types dry well when the dryer is functioning properly and the venting is correct.

  • Gas dryers can heat up quickly, which can shorten some cycles.
  • Electric dryers are typically simpler mechanically and can be very reliable.

In Florida, the biggest difference in “dry time” is often not gas vs electric—it’s venting, lint buildup, and airflow.

4. Maintenance and Repairs

Electric dryers

  • Often simpler internal systems
  • Common repairs include heating components, belts/rollers, and airflow-related issues
  • Service is straightforward for qualified appliance technicians

Gas dryers

  • Require gas-safe diagnosis and repair
  • Additional safety considerations and components related to ignition and gas control
  • Service should be handled by professionals trained for gas appliances

Reminder: Beacon Services & Appliances does not service gas appliances.

5. Which Should You Choose?

Choose electric if:

  • Your laundry area does not already have a proper gas hookup
  • You want the simplest installation and broad service availability
  • You want a straightforward repair path long-term

Choose gas if:

  • You already have a properly installed gas connection in the laundry room
  • You prefer gas appliances and understand the service requirements
  • You plan to use qualified gas professionals for installation and repairs
