Frigidaire Washer E42 Error Code: What It Means & What to Check

Q: My Frigidaire washer shows E42 and the door won’t unlock. What does that mean?

A: On many Frigidaire front-load washers, E42 means the washer believes the door is still locked after the cycle should be complete. Sometimes the washer is actually still preventing the unlock for a safety reason (like water still in the tub). Other times, the door lock system is stuck or the control isn’t sensing the unlock position correctly.

The safest approach is to avoid prying on the door, confirm the washer has fully drained, and then try a few safe reset steps.

Safety first (before you touch anything)

  • Do not force the door open. You can crack the latch, damage the hinge, or tear the boot seal.
  • If there is water in the tub, opening the door can cause a flood. Confirm it’s drained first.
  • If you smell electrical burning or see sparking, unplug the washer and call for service.

What usually causes E42

E42 is often tied to one of these conditions:

  • Washer didn’t fully drain (water remains in tub, so it won’t unlock)
  • Drain pump problem (weak pump, blockage, or intermittent failure)
  • Clogged drain filter / coin trap (common: hair pins, coins, lint, baby socks)
  • Door lock assembly sticking (lock mechanism not releasing)
  • Control/communication issue (board isn’t reading the lock switch correctly)
  • Power interruption during the end-of-cycle unlock sequence

What to do right now (safe troubleshooting)

Step 1: Confirm the cycle is truly finished

If the washer is still tumbling, counting down, or showing a status light (like spin or drain), it may still be in a safety lock phase. Let it finish completely.

Step 2: Check for standing water (very important)

Look through the door glass. If you see water pooled at the bottom, the washer may be locked because it didn’t drain fully.

  • Try selecting Drain/Spin (or Spin Only) to force a drain.
  • Listen: do you hear the drain pump running? Do you hear water moving through the drain hose?

Step 3: Try a simple power reset

  1. Press Cancel (or Pause/Cancel).
  2. Unplug the washer (or turn it off at the breaker) for 2 minutes.
  3. Restore power and wait 30–60 seconds to see if the door unlocks.

If E42 was triggered by a one-time electronic hiccup, this sometimes clears it.

Step 4: If you still suspect a drain issue, check the drain filter/coin trap (if accessible)

Many Frigidaire front-load washers have a small access panel near the bottom front. Behind it is the drain pump filter (coin trap).

Before you open it: place towels down and use a shallow pan. Some water will likely come out.

  1. Unplug the washer.
  2. Open the lower access panel.
  3. If there’s a small drain hose, use it to drain into a pan first (if your model has one).
  4. Slowly loosen the filter cap to release water, then remove and clear debris.
  5. Reinstall the filter snugly and restore power.

If you are not comfortable doing this (or the filter is hard to access), it’s okay to stop and schedule service.

Step 5: If the tub is empty but the door still won’t unlock

When there’s no water in the tub and E42 persists, the most likely causes are a stuck door lock, a failing lock switch, or a control reading problem. That usually needs a proper diagnostic.

When to call our friendly technicians in yellow

Call for service if:

  • The door stays locked after you confirm the tub is empty and you’ve done a reset
  • E42 happens repeatedly (even if it eventually unlocks)
  • You hear humming from the drain pump but it doesn’t move water
  • The washer stops mid-cycle, won’t drain, or leaves clothes soaking wet

We can safely diagnose whether the issue is the drain system, the door lock assembly, or the control/communication side — and fix it without damaging the door seal or latch.

How to help prevent E42 from coming back

  • Clean the drain filter periodically (especially if you have pets).
  • Check pockets and use a mesh bag for small items (baby socks, lint-prone items).
  • Don’t overload the washer — overloading can increase lint/debris and drainage issues.
  • If you frequently get drain-related symptoms, have the drain hose and standpipe setup checked.

Frigidaire Washer E42 FAQs

Can I pry the door open if I really need my clothes?

No — prying can break the latch, damage the hinge, or tear the door boot seal, which often turns a small issue into a bigger repair. First confirm the tub is drained, then try a reset and (if accessible) clear the drain filter.

Why won’t the washer unlock if it still has water in it?

Front-load washers use a safety lock to prevent flooding. If the washer thinks water is still present, it may keep the door locked until it drains to a safe level.

What if E42 happens after a power flicker?

A power interruption can confuse the end-of-cycle unlock sequence. Unplugging the washer for about 2 minutes and restoring power often clears the error — unless there is also a drain or lock problem.

Is E42 usually a drain problem or a lock problem?

It can be either. If you see water in the tub or clothes are soaking wet, start with drainage (drain cycle, pump sound, filter/coin trap). If the tub is empty and it still won’t unlock, the door lock assembly or its sensing circuit is more likely.

What part commonly fixes E42?

Common fixes include clearing a clogged drain filter, repairing a drain pump problem, or replacing the door lock assembly. Proper testing helps confirm the root cause before replacing parts.
