Why Is My Refrigerator Freezing My Food?

Q: Why does my refrigerator keep freezing items, especially near the back or on the top shelf?

A: When a refrigerator gets too cold, it usually means there is an issue with airflow, a stuck damper door, a faulty sensor, or incorrect temperature settings. Some models also push extra cold air during defrost cycles, which can freeze food if airflow isn’t balanced properly.

1. Temperature Set Too Low

Make sure the refrigerator is set between 37°F and 40°F. Anything below this can freeze sensitive foods.

2. Stuck or Over-Open Damper Door

The damper controls how much cold freezer air enters the refrigerator. If it sticks open:

  • Cold air constantly pours into the fridge
  • Top shelves or back corners freeze first

3. Faulty Temperature Sensor or Thermostat

If sensors read the wrong temperature, the control board may keep cooling even when the fridge is already cold enough.

4. Poor Airflow or Blocked Vents

If food blocks vents, cold air may get trapped in specific areas and freeze nearby items.

5. Freezer Issues Affect Refrigerator Temperatures

If the freezer is too cold, it may send overly cold air into the fridge. This often pairs with:

  • Loud fan noises
  • Long run times
  • Uneven temperature patterns
