Why Is My Freezer Making Noise?

Q: My freezer has started making new noises—buzzing, humming, or occasional rattling sounds. Is it normal for a freezer to be noisy, or is something going wrong?

A: Some noise is completely normal for modern freezers, especially models with fans, ice makers, or variable-speed compressors. However, new, loud, or repetitive noises can signal a developing problem. The type of sound you hear—buzzing, humming, clicking, rattling, or squealing—can offer clues about what’s happening. If anything sounds harsh, burning, or like metal scraping, it’s a good idea to have Beacon’s friendly technicians in the yellow polo shirt take a look.

1. Normal Freezer Sounds vs. Problem Sounds

First, it helps to recognize sounds that are usually normal:

  • Soft humming from the compressor when it runs
  • Gentle whooshing or fan noise as air moves inside
  • Occasional crackles or pops as plastic parts expand and contract with temperature changes
  • Single clicks when the compressor or defrost system turns on or off

Noises that deserve attention include loud buzzing, repeated clicking, scraping, or rattling that you can hear across the room.

2. Buzzing or Humming Sounds

Buzzing or humming can come from the compressor, fan motors, or even something as simple as the appliance vibrating against a wall.

  • If the noise is steady and low, it may be normal compressor operation.
  • If it’s loud and vibrating, check that the freezer is level and not touching cabinets or walls.
  • Make sure items on top of (or next to) the freezer aren’t rattling when it runs.

If a new loud hum appears and the freezer seems warm or struggles to cool, it’s best to schedule a service visit.

3. Clicking or Ticking Noises

Soft clicks when the compressor starts or stops are normal. Repeated clicking every few minutes, however, may be a warning sign.

  • Rapid, repetitive clicking can mean the compressor is trying to start but failing.
  • Some models click during defrost cycles; this is often normal if it’s brief.
  • If clicking is accompanied by poor cooling, it’s time to have the system checked.

Electrical issues and compressor problems are not DIY-safe and should be handled by a professional.

4. Rattling or Vibrating Noises

Rattles and vibrations are often easier to track down and can sometimes be solved without a repair.

  • Confirm the freezer is sitting on a solid, level surface.
  • Check that the rear access panel is secure and not vibrating.
  • Look for loose items touching the back of the unit or nearby walls.
  • Remove items sitting on top that might vibrate when the compressor runs.

If the rattling seems to come from inside the cabinet or behind panels, internal parts like fans or tubing may be moving and should be inspected.

5. Squealing, Scraping, or Chirping Sounds

High-pitched or scraping noises typically point to fan or ice issues:

  • A scraping or chirping sound inside the freezer may indicate the evaporator fan blade is hitting ice or debris.
  • Ice buildup around fan blades can cause intermittent noises that change when the door opens.
  • In some cases, a failing fan motor will whine or squeal before failing completely.

Because the fan is usually located behind interior panels, accessing it safely is a job for a trained technician.

6. Is an Ice Maker Causing the Noise?

If your freezer is part of a refrigerator with an ice maker, some extra noises are normal:

  • Water running briefly when the ice maker fills
  • Cubes dropping into the bin with a clunk
  • Occasional cracking as cubes loosen from the ice mold

However, loud grinding, continuous buzzing from the fill valve, or repeated failed attempts to harvest ice are not normal. For specific ice maker sounds, you can also check the Ice Maker Help Center on Beacon’s site.

7. When to Call Beacon About Freezer Noises

If your freezer is making new, loud, or worrying noises—especially along with temperature problems or visible frost issues—it’s smart to have it checked before a full breakdown.

  • The noises are getting louder or more frequent.
  • You notice temperature problems at the same time.
  • There is visible frost buildup near vents or panels.
  • You smell a burning or electrical odor.

Beacon’s friendly technicians in the yellow polo shirt can listen to the sounds in person, test components, and help you decide whether repair or replacement is the best move.
