Why Won’t My Dryer Turn On?
Q: When my dryer won’t start at all—no lights, no sounds, no response—what usually causes that?
A: When an electric dryer won’t turn on, the most common causes are power delivery problems (breaker, outlet, or cord), a door switch that isn’t closing properly, a failed start/control component, or an internal safety fuse that opened to prevent overheating. Some checks are safe for homeowners, but anything involving internal electrical testing should be handled by a trained technician.
Below, Beacon’s friendly technicians in the yellow polo shirt explain what you can safely check and when it’s time to call Beacon for diagnosis.
Check Power and Breakers First
Electric dryers require a full 240 volts to operate. If part of that power is missing, the dryer can appear completely dead.
- Confirm the dryer is firmly plugged into the outlet.
- Check that the dryer breaker is fully on—electric dryers use a double breaker.
- Reset the breaker by switching it fully off, then back on.
- Check for any GFCI or AFCI outlets on the same circuit that may have tripped (some laundry areas are protected this way).
Safety note: Never use extension cords with a dryer. If the breaker trips again after resetting, stop using the dryer and schedule service.
Door Not Closing or Door Switch Failure
Dryers are designed not to run if the door is open. A failed or misaligned door switch can prevent the dryer from starting even when the door looks closed.
- No response at all when pressing Start
- No audible “click” when the door closes
- The dryer only starts if the door is slammed
If the door has to be forced to get the dryer to respond, the switch is likely failing and should be replaced.
Start Button or Control Panel Problems
If the dryer has power but still won’t start, the issue may be in the controls.
- The Start button may not register when pressed
- The control board may fail to send power to the motor
- Some models display error codes or flash indicator lights
Control and start switch issues usually require electrical testing and are not DIY friendly.
Internal Fuses or Safety Devices
Electric dryers use internal fuses and safety devices to protect against overheating and electrical faults.
If one of these components opens:
- The dryer may appear completely dead
- No lights or sounds will be present
- The fuse must be tested and replaced if faulty
Accessing these components requires opening the dryer cabinet and should be handled by a trained technician.
When to Call Beacon
If you’ve confirmed power at the outlet and the breaker is on, but the dryer still won’t respond, it’s time for professional service.
Beacon’s friendly technicians in the yellow polo shirt can safely test door switches, start controls, internal fuses, wiring, and control boards to find the true cause.
Once diagnosed, we’ll explain your repair options clearly—and let you know honestly when replacement may make more sense.
