If you notice a burning smell, stop the cycle and unplug the dryer. Most causes are fixable, but running it could be unsafe. Here’s what to check—and when to call us.
Q: What’s the most common cause?
A: Lint contacting heat. A packed lint screen, clogged vent hose, or blocked exterior vent can overheat and create a hot, “scorched” odor. Clean the lint screen with warm water + dish soap (removes invisible fabric softener film), inspect the vent hose for kinks or lint, and confirm the outdoor flap opens freely.
Q: Could it be something touching the heater?
A: Yes. Stray items (a dryer sheet, small sock) can slip past the lint screen and singe near the heater or burner area, causing a sharp smell. If the odor returns after a thorough clean, book service.
Q: I just installed the dryer—why does it smell?
A: New-appliance “burn-off.” Light, temporary odor can occur during the first few cycles as protective oils/finishes dissipate. It should fade quickly. If it gets stronger or smoky, power off and call.
Q: Can a part failure cause a burning smell?
A: Yes. A worn drum belt rubbing, seized drum rollers, weak blower wheel, failed thermostat/thermistor, or element shorting to the housing can overheat and create odor. (For gas models, igniter/gas valve issues can also smell—but Beacon does not service gas dryers.)
Q: How do I prevent it long-term?
A: Clean the lint screen every load, deep-wash it monthly, check the vent path every 3–6 months, avoid overloading, and use rigid or semi-rigid duct—not plastic flex.
Q: When should I call Beacon?
A: If the smell is strong, returns after cleaning, or you see smoke/discoloration, unplug immediately and schedule service. We’ll inspect airflow and components, then repair the exact cause.
