Do I Need a Plumber or Electrician for My Appliance Installation?

Q: I’m scheduling a new appliance installation. Will Beacon handle everything, or do I also need a plumber or electrician?

A: In many straightforward, like-for-like replacements, Beacon can handle the installation using your existing plumbing and electrical connections. However, if new water lines, drains, outlets, circuits, or code-related changes are required, a licensed plumber or electrician may be needed to complete the work safely and correctly.

1. When Beacon Can Handle the Installation

For most standard replacements, our friendly technicians in yellow can install appliances using existing, code-compliant hookups, including:

  • Refrigerators connecting to an existing water line and functional shutoff valve.
  • Washers connecting to existing hot and cold valves with a proper drain standpipe.
  • Electric dryers using an existing 240-volt outlet and a vent that is in good condition.
  • Dishwashers connecting to existing under-sink water and drain connections.
  • Electric ranges and ovens using an existing 240-volt outlet and correct cabinet opening.

If the new appliance is replacing a similar one and the hookups are already in good shape, no additional trades are usually required.

2. When You May Need a Licensed Plumber

A licensed plumber may be required if:

  • There is no usable shutoff valve for a refrigerator, washer, or dishwasher.
  • A new water line needs to be added or relocated.
  • The drain configuration needs to be moved or modified.
  • There are leaks, corrosion, or plumbing damage beyond normal connection work.

These situations go beyond appliance hookup and should be addressed before installation day.

3. When You May Need a Licensed Electrician

An electrician may be necessary when:

  • A proper 240-volt outlet is not present for an electric range or dryer.
  • You are switching from a different appliance type and need a new circuit.
  • An existing outlet, cord, or wiring shows signs of damage or overheating.
  • Your electrical panel does not have capacity for the required circuit.

Electrical safety and code compliance are critical, especially with high-voltage appliances.

4. Beacon Does Not Service Gas Appliances

Beacon Services & Appliances installs and services electric appliances only. We do not install, convert, or service gas appliances. Any gas-related work should be handled by a properly licensed gas contractor or your local utility provider.

5. How to Know What You’ll Need

If you’re unsure whether your installation is straightforward:

  • Talk with Beacon before scheduling delivery.
  • Share photos of outlets, valves, drains, or under-sink connections if possible.
  • Ask whether your project appears to be a simple replacement or if additional work may be required.

Knowing this ahead of time helps avoid delays on installation day.
