Why Is My Outdoor AC Unit Short Cycling (Turning On and Off Frequently)?

Q: My AC turns on, runs briefly, shuts off, and then starts again. Why?

A: Short cycling — when the system starts and stops every few minutes — is a sign of a problem. It can be caused by airflow issues, dirty coils, low refrigerant, overheating, thermostat issues, or even improper system sizing.

1. Airflow Problems

Restricted airflow across the indoor coil can cause the system to cool too quickly or freeze, triggering rapid shut-offs.

  • Dirty air filter
  • Closed or blocked vents
  • Weak or failing blower motor

2. Dirty Condenser Coils

If the outdoor coil is packed with debris, the system overheats, triggering the compressor’s safety shutoff.

3. Low Refrigerant

Low refrigerant reduces cooling capacity and can cause rapid temperature swings or overheating.

  • Warm air from vents
  • Lines sweating or freezing

4. Bad Thermostat Placement or Issues

If your thermostat is near a heat source or in direct sunlight, it may prematurely command the system to shut off.

5. Oversized or Undersized System

Systems that are too large cool the home too quickly, causing frequent starts and stops — especially in smaller rooms or recently renovated homes.

6. When to Call Beacon

Short cycling puts strain on the compressor and electrical components. Beacon’s friendly technicians in the yellow polo shirt can diagnose whether it’s a coil, airflow, refrigerant, thermostat, or sizing issue.

We’ll see how Beacon can help restore steady, reliable cooling.
