Why Is My Condenser Fan Not Spinning?
Q: The outdoor AC unit is on, but the fan on top isn’t spinning. What’s wrong?
A: A non-spinning condenser fan usually points to a failed fan motor, a bad capacitor, or a control issue. In some cases the unit may hum or get very hot while the fan sits still. Because the condenser fan removes heat from the system, running your AC like this can quickly damage the compressor—so turning the system off is the safest first step.
1. Is the Unit Humming or Completely Silent?
- Humming but no fan spin: Often a failed capacitor or a stuck/seizing fan motor.
- Completely silent: Could be a power, contactor, or control issue—not just the fan.
If you hear loud humming and the top of the unit feels very hot, turn the system off at the thermostat to prevent damage.
2. Stuck or Seized Fan Motor
Over time, fan bearings can wear out, causing the motor to seize. You might notice:
- A humming sound but no rotation
- A fan blade that is difficult to turn when power is off
Safety note: Never stick objects through the fan guard on a running or powered unit. Always leave mechanical testing to a technician.
3. Failed Fan Capacitor
The capacitor gives the fan motor a “boost” to start. When it fails, the motor may have power but can’t start spinning.
- The fan may try to start, then stop
- The unit may hum without airflow
Capacitors can hold a dangerous charge even when the power is off, so this is not a DIY part to handle.
4. Control or Contactor Issues
The contactor acts like a heavy-duty switch that sends power to the outdoor components. If it fails, one or both (fan and compressor) may stop running.
In some cases, the compressor may run while the fan does not, which can drive pressures and temperatures dangerously high inside the system.
5. Turn It Off and Call Beacon
If the condenser fan isn’t spinning, the safest move is to turn your AC off at the thermostat until it can be checked.
Beacon’s friendly technicians in the yellow polo shirt can test the capacitor, fan motor, contactor, and wiring to find the root cause and help protect your compressor.
We’ll see how Beacon can help get your system cooling again.
