Bosch Dishwasher E22 & E24 Error Codes: What They Mean and How to Fix Them
On Bosch dishwashers, E22 and E24 both point to drain system problems. One usually means the filters or sump are blocked; the other means water can’t get out through the drain path. Here’s how to tell them apart and what to check safely before you call us.
What’s the difference between E22 and E24?
- E22: Filter or sump blockage, often with standing water around the filters.
- E24: Drain path issue such as a kinked or clogged hose, improper installation, or a drain pump/check-valve problem.
What causes Bosch E22 most of the time?
E22 is commonly caused by dirty or mis-seated filters or food debris in the sump.
- Remove the lower rack.
- Twist out the coarse and fine filters.
- Rinse filters under warm water.
- Check the impeller opening for seeds, glass, labels, or buildup.
- Reinstall filters flat and locked into place.
What usually triggers Bosch E24?
E24 points to a problem getting water out of the dishwasher.
- Kinked or clogged drain hose
- Collapsed or blocked internal check valve
- Improper drain hose routing
- Drain pump issues
Pull the unit slightly forward and confirm the drain hose isn’t crushed behind the cabinet. Check that the hose rises into a proper high loop or connects through an air gap.
Recently installed a new dishwasher or garbage disposal?
If a garbage disposal was recently installed or replaced, make sure the knockout plug inside the disposal inlet was removed. If it’s still in place, the dishwasher cannot drain and will often throw E24.
How should the drain hose be routed?
The drain hose should have a proper high loop under the counter or a code-compliant air gap. Keep the run as smooth and short as possible, and avoid low spots where grease and debris can collect.
Can oversuds cause E22 or E24?
Yes. Too much detergent or rinse aid can create foam that slows drainage and confuses the drain system.
- Use HE dishwasher detergent only
- Reduce detergent if you see suds
- Do not overfill rinse aid
