Why Is My Air Handler Sweating or Dripping Water on the Outside?
Q: My indoor AC unit is sweating or dripping water on the outside. Is that normal?
A: Light sweating can be normal in Florida’s humidity, especially if your air handler is in a garage, attic, or closet. But visible water droplets, wet drywall, or puddles are not “normal.” Heavy sweating usually points to insulation damage, airflow problems, or a drain issue that needs attention.
1. High Humidity Around the Unit
Air handlers in garages, closets, and attics can sweat when the surrounding air is extremely humid. In Citrus County, that’s common.
Minor sweating: light dampness on the cabinet, no drips, no water staining.
Heavy sweating: visible droplets, damp insulation, wet drywall, or water collecting below the unit.
2. Poor or Damaged Insulation
If internal cabinet insulation is torn or missing, cold metal meets warm humid air and condensation forms quickly. This can happen after maintenance, age-related deterioration, or if the unit has been opened repeatedly.
Common signs include:
- Water around the base of the air handler
- Dripping from seams or corners of the cabinet
- A sweaty suction line near the cabinet (some sweating on the suction line can be normal, but heavy condensation at the cabinet edge is a clue)
3. Low Airflow Across the Coil
Low airflow can make the evaporator coil run colder than it should, which increases condensation and sweating on the cabinet. Common causes include a dirty filter, a dirty coil, or a blower issue.
4. Blocked or Partially Clogged Drain Line
If the condensate drain is restricted, moisture can back up and find ways out through seams or soaked insulation instead of draining properly. Even a partial clog can cause intermittent sweating and dripping.
