Why Does My Air Handler Smell Musty or Moldy?

Q: Why does my home smell musty or moldy when the AC runs?

A: A musty smell from your air handler usually means moisture has been sitting where it shouldn’t — in the drain pan, on the evaporator coil, or inside nearby ductwork. Florida’s humidity makes this especially common if drains clog, filters are overdue, or air handlers are in damp spaces.

1. Standing Water in the Drain Pan

If the condensate drain line is clogged or slow, water can sit in the drain pan and become a perfect place for biological growth. When the blower runs, that smell can spread through the whole home.

2. Dirty or Wet Evaporator Coil

Dust and organic material can collect on the evaporator coil. When combined with moisture, this can produce musty or “wet sock” odors.

  • Overdue filters allow more dust to reach the coil
  • Short cycling or low airflow can leave parts of the coil damp longer

3. Air Filter Problems

A neglected filter can grow musty on its own or allow debris to pass into the coil and pan. Changing filters on schedule is one of the easiest ways to reduce odors.

4. Ductwork and Return Air Issues

If ducts run through humid spaces or have small leaks, they can pull in musty air from attics, garages, or wall cavities. That smell then appears whenever the system runs.

5. When to Call Beacon

If the odor is strong, new, or doesn’t improve after a filter change and drain check, it’s time for a deeper IAQ evaluation. Beacon’s friendly technicians in the yellow polo shirt can inspect the air handler, drain system, and ductwork, and talk with you about indoor air quality options.

We’ll see how Beacon can help you breathe cleaner, fresher air in your home.
