Short cycling means your air conditioner starts and stops more often than it should. It wastes energy, wears parts out faster, and doesn’t cool well. Here’s how to troubleshoot—and when to call us.
Q: What’s the most common cause?
A: Airflow restrictions. A clogged filter, blocked return, closed supply vents, or a dirty evaporator coil makes the system overheat or frost and shut down early. Replace the filter, open all supply vents, clear returns, and schedule a coil cleaning if needed.
Q: Could a thermostat issue cause rapid cycling?
A: Yes. If the thermostat is in direct sun, near a lamp, or above an appliance, it can think the room is hotter than it is. Make sure it’s level (older mercury stats), has fresh batteries, and is placed on an interior wall away from heat sources and drafts.
Q: What about low refrigerant or a leak?
A: Low charge can cause the evaporator to ice up, triggering short cycles and weak cooling. If you see ice or hear hissing, turn the system off to thaw and schedule service—we’ll find and fix the leak and recharge per specs.
Q: Can the system be oversized?
A: Yes. An oversized AC cools the air fast but shuts off before pulling out humidity, then kicks back on—classic Florida “cold and clammy.” We can verify sizing, duct design, and blower settings, and tune or propose right-sizing options.
Q: Could electrical/safety components be tripping?
A: A failing capacitor, contactor, blower motor, high-pressure switch, or float switch (condensate backup) can stop the cycle. If airflow is fine and short cycling persists, it’s time for diagnostics.
Q: When should I call Beacon?
A: If a new filter and clear vents don’t help—or you notice ice, water at the air handler, or breaker trips—book service. We’ll test airflow, charge, controls, and safety switches and fix the root cause.
