Why Is My AC Running but Not Cooling?
Q: My AC runs and the outdoor unit is on, but the house isn’t getting cool. What’s happening?
A: An AC that runs but doesn’t cool well usually has one of three problems: poor airflow, a dirty or blocked coil, or a refrigerant/charge issue. In Florida, long run times and outdoor debris can make these problems show up fast.
1. Check Airflow First
If there isn’t enough air moving across the indoor coil, the system can’t remove heat effectively.
- Dirty or overdue air filter
- Closed or blocked supply vents
- Weak airflow from vents (see: Why Is My Air Handler Not Blowing Enough Air?)
2. Dirty Outdoor Condenser Coils
The outdoor coil needs to dump heat into the outside air. When it’s clogged with grass clippings, dust, and debris, cooling capacity drops.
- Unit feels extremely hot to the touch
- Fan runs but air from the top feels barely warm or oddly hot
Safe cleaning should be gentle — never bend the fins or blast the coil with a strong pressure washer. Learn more in: How Do I Clean My Outdoor AC Coils Safely?
3. Frozen Indoor Coil
If the indoor coil freezes, airflow and cooling are severely reduced.
- Little or no airflow from vents
- Visible ice on refrigerant lines or at the air handler
For more detail, see: Why Is My Air Handler Freezing Up Inside?
4. Low Refrigerant or Leak
Low refrigerant can cause long run times, poor cooling, and ice formation. Simply “topping off” without finding the leak is a temporary fix.
- System may cool slightly but never reaches setpoint
- Lines may sweat or freeze
5. Thermostat or Sizing Issues
Occasionally, the thermostat may be misreading the room temperature, or the system may be undersized for the home. In those cases, the AC can run constantly without keeping up.
